Neighborhood

Situated in the heart of the old town centre, the Ostello degli Elefanti is only a few footsteps away from the city’s striking cultural sights.

We are right next to the piazza Duomo, with its seven hundred year old palaces, the cathedral, the fountain of Amenano river , and the old fish market with its thousands of colours and intense smells.

And there’s much more to see nearby: Ursino castle, today host to the city museum but once the summer residence of the Sicilian King and Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, and Verga’s house, the Catanian writer whose Realism made Sicily famous throughout the whole world.

The amphitheatre, reminiscent of the Roman era, is a few metres away from the stunning via Crociferi, is considered the Baroque Catanian road par excellence. There is the former Benedictine Monastery, said to be the biggest in Europe, the Belliniano museum, named after the significant 19th century Catanian composer Vincenzo Bellini, renowned for writing ‘Norma’, the piazza Teatro Massimo, and the via Etnea, full of wonderful baroque time capsules, has now become the centre for shopping in Catania.

Mt. Etna overlooks the city, an active volcano that inspired myths and legends never forgotten by the Catanian people. Lovers of the sea will find the Playa, the long sandy shore and the reef with its characteristic black rocks, peppered with numerous beach resorts, creature comforts and various tourist services. At night it all transforms, and you can dance in clubs and bars on the sea under the light of the moon.

The city by night is a magical beauty, packed with young people moving along the small streets. You can wander through the long evenings listening to music or hopping between hundreds of pubs and trattorias.

All this and so much more awaits anyone wanting to visit us: an all rounded holiday full of culture and fine dining by the sea and in the mountains. Catania has so much to offer! Seven times destroyed by natural disasters, but always rebuilt with the same splendour.

‘Melior de Cenere Surgo’ recite the Latin inscriptions on the local monuments: “Flourishing I rise from the ashes again”.

Catania: the ideal place for your holiday in Sicily!

How to get there

It’s extremely easy to get to the Ostello degli Elefanti.

The hostel is 1. 3km or 16 minutes by foot from the train and bus stations. Follow the via VI Aprile towards the piazza dei Martiri. Once you’re in the piazza turn right and follow the via Vittorio Emanuele II until you arrive at the piazza Duomo. Then turn to your right for the via Etnea – we are number 28 on this road, the first palace on the right.

There are so many buses from the station which pass us by - it’s child’s play to find us by asking for the piazza Duomo.
